Take the First Step
A step; it's the simple, yet powerful answer to accomplish any worthwhile effort. From daily chores to achieving a year-long project goal, and yes, even to creating your legacy - - it all begins with a single step.
Each calendar year I set up goals for the year in each "category" of my life. Family goals, fitness, community, career, and so on.
In the fitness category for this year, I've signed up for the Marine Corp Marathon in Washington DC at the end of October.
Now I have always enjoyed working out at the gym and playing casual sports every now and then - - but I've never really been a runner.
Heck, I don't even LIKE to run!
At least I didn't when my training began a few months ago. And, that's one of the reasons I CHOSE the goal. It put me slightly (actually, quite a ways) out of my comfort zone.
Friends and coworkers have asked me: "What made you decide to do this?!"
In trying to answer their question - - it takes me back to a neighborhood cocktail party this past Spring.
Mind you, in the past a few drinks and party conversation lead to me jumping out of a plane years ago! (Once again, sorry Mom.)
But this time the goal was different.
At the party, I was talking to an avid runner. A few others joined us. And soon I realized that I was surrounded by 5 or 6 marathon runners!
I was the odd man out.
And, I was fascinated by their casual attitude towards running 26.2 miles. One of them had a race the next day. (She was drinking a Sprite by the way.) It was a fun & engaging conversation, and they encouraged me to take on a marathon.
And, it was that very moment the idea formed in my brain that I could run 26.2 miles.
"It's easy. You just start running and then you don't stop," one of my new marathon friends told me. Said it so casually, and confidently, that it tore down all my preconceptions of the impossibility of it all.
Right then, I decided I could do it.
The first step was in my brain.
Well, I've taken many steps since then in my training all summer. This morning I put in a 12 miler - - 2 hours of running and enjoyed it. As I ran, I thought about what topic to begin the first LoveMyGrandchild newsletter, when the First Step concept hit me.
You may be at a point where you are mentally engaged in the concept of a legacy effort with your grandchildren, but still struggling with a natural series of internal questions - - How? What? When? Where?
Take action, gain confidence, and enjoy the simple lesson that will surely come your way when you Take the First Step.
