Grandparents: The Secret Reason to Costume Up this Halloween
STOP! Why did you choose to read this article?
I think I know. I believe that your eyes on these words are a true indication of your uniqueness. And, I'll share with you my premise.
Most other grandparents skipped right over that title, dismissing the thought in a fraction of a moment. It's against the"rules" for adults to put on a costume. Unconsciously trapped within the prison walls of adulthood, many grandparents lose out on life's most meaningful second chance; to rediscover the whimsy of childhood.
Yes, that's right! A second chance to feel that sense of freedom, of fantasy, and hope that combine to create the magic of childhood. It's the secret sauce in having fun.
And, Halloween offers a unique chance to break out of those adult rules, and join in on the party. After all, kids have an absolute blast on Halloween, and it's easy to see why:
Halloween Costumes - dressing up is a virtual permission slip to let go of the normal rules of how to behave.
Friends & Family - sharing our fun with those we love is an obvious win for the kids, who thrill in seeing what everyone is dressed as.
Outside in the Dark - Heading out into the night is an idea that challenges normalcy too. It "breaks the rules", adding an element of mystery and suspense. Who else is out here in the dark?
Trick or Treating - Kids understand the magic of the chase, barely able to contain themselves from running door to door. And, young and old alike enjoy the chance to connect. It brings out the sense of community in a way that didn't exist just before the sun went down.
Candy - need I say more? The very thought of candy works children into a frenzy and the actual sugar rush is like pouring fuel on a raging fire of joy on Halloween night.
Like any great secret of life, the true magic is often hidden. A Halloween cynic may think it's all about the candy...but they'd be wrong.
Halloween is a crescendo of fun; building from a sequence of shared and interconnected activities.
The real magic all begins with a simple thought; the decision to have fun. And, dressing up in a Halloween costume is the key that unlocks us from our every day rules.
Kids know this secret.
They'll have great memories of childhood costumes, along with the anticipation and excitement of the chase. But perhaps no memory will be stronger than the Halloween when their grandparents decided to costume up.
And, that's where I believe YOU are a unique grandparent. You've read this far and seek the key.
You want to escape through the door that traps most others.
Putting on a Halloween costume with your grandchildren clicks open the lock. The door will swing open and you can't possibly imagine the resulting smile from your grandchild on the other side.
Make the decision to have fun today. Find a costume for yourself, your grandchild, and even your pet! Plus many other great ideas for a special Halloween with your grandchild...
