Will to Win

Grandparenting offers you an amazing opportunity to connect with your grandchild. But to create your legacy, a secret ingredient must be there right from the very beginning.

Napoleon Hill summed it up famously as a burning desire to win. Though his famous book Think & Grow Richwidget focuses on attaining financial dreams…his lessons are true in the pursuit of any great goal.

The great secret of the ages shared collectively by those who've left great legacies and incredible marks on the world is really quite simple.

They believed they could do it.

Whether you think that you can, or that you can't,

you are usually right.

~ Henry Ford

And, they applied their convictions to the purpose of achieving their dream. So, an important lesson is to choose your dreams wisely. You will likely be pouring your heart, mind, and soul towards its purpose.

Challenges will arise to block you dozens of times. Your energy drained. Your spirits deplenished. But if you have chosen your dream wisely & applied your burning desire...each obstacle simply becomes a milemarker on your progress.

As with any great journey, you'll be in for many unanticipated adventures along the way. Like climbing a mountain, with each spectacular vista comes the danger of falling, of losing your footing. And, yes, your foot will slip.

You must embrace the risk. Face it with courage, confidence, strength, and all the assurances your burning desire provides you. With risk comes reward. The two are inextricably linked.

Time will often feel your enemy. Your progress muted as though you never began the ascent.

Relativity is a wonderfully deceptive concept.

Climbing that mountain, you'll get to a point where it appears the mountain has tricked you. It never ends! Each crest is followed by an entirely new slope to another. And another.

But, your progress is real. And literally before you know it, your surprise will be in reaching the top.

Parachutists call this "ground rush". I took my own jump from a plane in 1998. It was a complete thrill and reaffirmed for me several life lessons. In falling to the earth at 120 mph, you feel the air whipping past your face, contorting the skin of your cheeks into extremes. Yet, the ground 2.5 miles below seems to remain motionless.

Your progress seems muted. Motionless. And, yet you are racing to the ground. When you pull the chute at 1 mile up, the relativity trick resets again. Floating and flying around, you seem to remain timelessly enjoying the experience. Then, quite suddenly, the ground is noticably closer and rapidly accelerating towards you. Ground rush! Amazing.

Our minds trick us to believe that our first steps on a journey are wasted. No progress made.

No wonder the majority of our dreams, pursued until the first obstacle, quickly fizzle from existence.

Throughout history, many, many spectacular successes were abandoned just before the ground rush set in. Just before we as humans would have seen & felt our significant progress. When we feel completely done in from the challenge of it all. And as though all our efforts were for naught...you must remember this one critical difference.

The difference separates great achievement from great efforts. Never, ever quit.

Each low, each time you feel like your goal is forever out of reach...you must rely on your deep inner strength and will to win to carry on.

It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.

~Edmund Hillary
