I have found that the best way to give advise to your children is to find out what they want and then advise them to do it.
~Harry S. Truman
So, here’s some magical truth. You DON’T own the creation of your legacy. Don’t get me wrong. No one but you can bring your legacy from concept into creation. However, this hard lesson is critical to your success. As do most business ideas or new product ideas fail, the single most common mistake made by corporations is to ignore their “customer”.
In this case, the customer is your grandchildren! Try as you may, if your legacy concept does not connect with the soul & interests of your grandchildren, it will be unlikely to take flight. No, you don’t OWN your legacy…since legacies largely live on long after we’re gone. So, it’s not YOUR inner thoughts and desires that carry it forward. It’s your grandkids’. Get to know them....through their own eyes...
Your strengths & interests are equally important. Otherwise your motivation to connect fully with the legacy will be strenuous and difficult, if not impossible.
To leave a lasting legacy…your interests must intersect somehow with your grandchilds'.
Oh no! I have multiple grandchildren all with different interests….can I develop multiple legacies?
Bingo….you win. Remember, your legacy creation has the potential to generate positive human experience long after you are gone but only if your grandchildren connect with it and move it forward. Legacies are picked up, improved, and passed along.
Each grandchild represents a legacy opportunity that is unique and extraordinary.
